AMI-Alternative Methods of Instruction

Starting with the 2020-2021 school year, school districts are no longer required to make up lost or canceled school hours due to exceptional or emergency circumstances (up to 36 hours), provided they implement an Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) Plan approved by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). For the 2024-25 school year, the Gallatin R-V School District has this plan in place.

According to DESE, AMI days are designed to ensure instructional continuity during unforeseen events, such as inclement weather or emergencies that interrupt traditional classroom learning. These days provide school districts with flexible learning options, allowing students to continue their education from home.

On AMI days, teachers may assign online coursework, distribute learning packets, or utilize other instructional resources to keep students engaged and progressing academically. The purpose of AMI days is to minimize disruptions to education, ensuring students remain connected to their learning despite unexpected school closures. By leveraging technology and innovative teaching methods, the Gallatin R-V School District demonstrates its commitment to student success and maintaining learning continuity.

How Will AMI Days Work?

  • The district will inform parents and students when an AMI day has been scheduled (phone call, text, social media, local news channels).

  • Online resources will be provided by teachers through the Google Classroom or other approved online web resources.

  • Instructions and information will be provided by teachers, and students are expected to complete and submit learning activities. If parents have questions about learning activities, they will contact their child's teacher through email.

  • For AMI days, a choice board will be posted on Google Classroom, or sent home in your child’s take-home folder. You can also find the choice boards attached to this page for your convenience. To be counted for daily attendance, your child must complete the assigned choice board activities as instructed.

Important Points To Remember For AMI Days At Gallatin R-V

  • Students will NOT attend school on an AMI day. All students will have instructional activities to be completed at home on AMI days.

  • AMI days count as instructional days and do not have to be made up at the end of the school year if students and staff complete assigned work.

  • Students who do not complete and submit AMI assignments, will be marked absent for the related AMI day.

  • The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has allowed 36 AMI hours for the 24-25 school year.
